In a previous post we talked about how to minimize wear on your engine and part of that is choosing the right oil. Today we want to deal with a false belief regarding motor oil. When the engine oil appears to be a darker color, many people falsely think that there is something wrong and that an immediate oil change is needed. This is not always the case. That is why here at Synthetic Oil Direct we want to take the time to briefly discuss this issue.

Engine Oil Additives May Cause Change in Color

When you check your oil, the color does not always determine that there is a problem. In fact this is rarely true and many times it means the opposite. If you use a motor oil with additives, they will most likely have detergent additives. What these additives do is that they prevent sludge from building up in your engine. The way they do this is by not allowing dirt particles to stick together or to build up in certain sections of the engine. Instead they retain the dirt particles in  oil and ´protect the engine, this in turn may cause the oil to appear darker.

Darker Motor Oil Color Is Not a Problem Indicator

The appearance of a darker color in the oil can actually indicate that the oil is working properly, and doing its function of preventing the engine from sludge build up. However, it is important to keep in mind that there is a limit as to how much of those dirt particles can be retained by the oil. The color may not indicate this, but this is an important to not forget to change your oil periodically, according to the recommendations of your car´s manufacturer.
